Gaia Vision’s Flood Forecasting Project Selected for PwC Foundation’s Spring 2023 Grant Program – Environment (Flood Forecasting)
We are pleased to announce that Gaia Vision’s flood forecasting project has been selected by the PwC Foundation for its Spring 2023 grant program – Environment (Flood Forecasting).
Background of Gaia Vision’s Flood Forecasting Technology Development
Flood risk is expected to increase in the future due to climate change. In order to minimize the damage caused by floods, it is important to predict the extent of flooding in advance and take appropriate measures such as evacuation. Until now, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued early warnings, but there have been no detailed flood forecasting services that include information on inundation depths. In May 2023, the Meteorological Service Law and Flood Prevention Law were revised to allow private companies to provide flood forecasting services subject to permission. In anticipation of this change, Gaia Vision has been conducting research and development to provide high-resolution flood forecasting services based on global river flooding simulation technology.
Gaia Vision’s Flood Forecasting Project under this grant program
With this grant from the PwC Foundation, Gaia Vision aims to develop and implement flood forecasting solutions in the society. While conducting forecasting throughout Japan and globally, we will conduct research and development to improve accuracy in the users’ target areas and develop applications for actual use by users. Through this initiative, we expect to be able to provide high-resolution flood forecast data for the next 1~2 days to local governments, companies (infrastructure sectors), financial institutions, etc. For example, the project aims to enable local governments to make decisions on evacuation orders based on objective and quantitative information, or infrastructure companies to respond to floods in advance. By implementing such a system around the world, we will contribute to the adaptation of society to climate change globally.
